In this case it seems as if it might be a tragic thought ... even if the "thing" someone just said was that they love you and need you or if they said good-bye.
If the perceived future is still desolate then it doesn't matter what someone says. We're going to feel what we feel regardless of the other person's intentions.
The future is certainly not desolate. Didn't mean to portray that . . . just can't put the "genie back in the bottle" to use a bad cliche. And people often say that they want one thing, when they really want something completely different.
Just musing to the internet about that . . .
